Compatibility requires an iPhone XS or later, or a second-generation iPhone SE or newer, running at least iOS 13. While Apple does not publish a centralized list of all supported vehicle models, the company confirms that support has expanded significantly since the 2020 launch on the BMW 5 Series. Brands currently supporting the technology include Audi, BMW, BYD, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Nio, Polestar, Ram, Rivian, and Volvo.

Apple suggests that users check vehicle compatibility by referencing its list of CarPlay-supported models or by contacting the manufacturer directly. The setup process varies by brand; some vehicles require users to complete the pairing through the manufacturer’s proprietary mobile app, while others may require the user to place the device on a specific key reader inside the car during the initial sync.
Security Features and Key Sharing
Digital keys offer a granular level of control over vehicle access. Through the Wallet app, owners can share their digital key with other contacts. The primary user can set an activation code for added security, requiring the recipient to enter a one-time code before the key becomes functional. Apple manages this through the “Share” button within the Wallet interface, which verifies the user’s identity before issuing the digital credential.
In the event of a lost or stolen device, the “Find My” app provides a kill switch. Marking the iPhone as lost in the “Devices” section automatically disables all digital keys associated with that phone. However, previously shared keys remain active until manually revoked by the owner.
