Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition arrives digitally on July 30, 2026, and physically on October 1, bringing 4K resolution in TV mode, a new six-Blade Merc Assault mode, and a rare crossover Blade named MOMO from Monolith Soft’s Xenosaga series.
Technical Upgrades and Visual Overhauls for Switch 2
Nintendo and developer Monolith Soft have detailed graphical and performance enhancements for the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition overview trailer. Publisher Nintendo and developer Monolith Soft have released a two-minute overview trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which is due out digitally on July 30 and physically on October 1. The upgraded version supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second when docked in TV mode, while handheld play runs at full HD 1080p at 60 frames per second. As part of the package, there will be new outfits for Pyra and Mythra, as well as a new rare blade in Momo (originally from the Xenosaga series) who can switch their outfits as well as their elemental affinity.
In addition to active gameplay running at a smoother framerate, in-game cutscenes feature enhanced resolution, improved detail, and cleaner rendering. This journey has been enhanced with 4K resolution in TV mode, and full HD in handheld mode, at 60 frames per second—and with smoother and sharper cutscenes. These technical updates align the title with similar enhancements previously rolled out for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition on the same hardware.
Merc Assault Mode and Direct Blade Control
The upgraded version introduces a brand-new gameplay feature called Merc Assault, which breaks away from traditional party dynamics by letting players take direct control of Blades. Also new here is Merc Assault, a mode that lets you directly control Blades. You can choose up to six Blades to send out on a mission. In battle, you can change which one you control at any time.
This system introduces new strategic options for chaining Blade Specials during missions. Furthermore, completing objectives in Merc Assault unlocks exclusive equipment designs for Pyra and Mythra, which can be toggled on or off during both regular exploration and cinematic cutscenes. The new outfits for Pyra and Mythra can be obtained as rewards for Merc Assault. Once acquired, you can switch between these and the original outfits at any time.
MOMO Joins as a New Rare Blade
Expanding the roster of available companions, a new rare Blade named MOMO joins the package with an accompanying quest line. Finally, Momo has been revealed as a brand new Blade. She can swap between two forms to change her appearance and elemental affinity (light and dark). Momo will come with a new quest. As noted by Nintendo World Report, MOMO originates from Monolith Soft’s past sci-fi RPG series Xenosaga, following in the footsteps of prior guest Blades KOS-MOS and T-elos.
MOMO features the unique ability to swap between two distinct forms, altering both her visual appearance and elemental affinity between light and dark attributes.
Pricing, Upgrade Paths, and Release Schedule
The updated release follows a split release schedule for digital and physical formats. The digital edition launches on the Nintendo eShop on July 30, 2026, while the physical boxed version arrives later on October 1, 2026.
Players who already own the original game on the first-generation Nintendo Switch are not required to purchase a full-price copy. Instead, an upgrade pack will be available digitally for $20 AUD, granting immediate access to the enhanced visuals, Merc Assault mode, and additional content. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases on the eShop next week as both a full release and a $20 AUD upgrade. A physical release is also planned for October.
