It was all football – which Vrabel deftly handles like Ted Williams did fastballs back in the day. Vrabel was asked about the status of second-round draft pick Gabe Jacas, who remains unsigned.
At long last, the New England Patriots’ offseason is just about over. The first practice of training camp is Saturday. The season opener in Seattle is less than seven weeks away. At this point, we already know a lot about the Patriots. The big offseason moves are done. The coaching staff is in place.
Christian Gonzalez Contract Extension Remains Unresolved
Still, with the first practices on the horizon, a few questions linger. Let’s look at the biggest remaining questions as training camp begins. Christian Gonzalez’s contract has Gonzalez eligible to sign an extension for months, but a deal has not been reached. That apparently irked the cornerback enough that he barely participated in spring practices.
On one hand, these sorts of deals get done in August all the time. That would suggest there’s little cause for concern yet regarding the long-term future of one of the franchise’s best players. On the other hand, if the Pats don’t get a deal done by Week 1, the story threatens to cloud Gonzalez’s season.
Still just 24 years old, Gonzalez has a legit argument to reset the cornerback market and become the league’s highest-paid player at the position. Veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins remains unsigned, but he will be on the field with the New England Patriots as they open their 2026 training camp. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel explained Hopkins’ presence came as the 34-year-old considers a potential post-playing career in coaching or scouting.
“DeAndre Hopkins is here with us, just to kind of check things out as far as what he wants to do as far as coaching,” Vrabel told reporters on Friday, July 24. “You’ll see him on the field.”

Hopkins’ transition to coaching may not be permanent. He has yet to officially retire and expressed a desire to continue playing in a June 24 interview on SiriusXM’s NFL Radio where he said he has a lot ball left.
Nonetheless, Vrabel explained Hopkins – who played for Vrabel during the 2023 season with the Tennessee Titans – had asked to come to training camp to explore his future career options.

Roster Battles and Position Questions Ahead of the Season Opener
The Patriots veterans arrived at Gillette Stadium on Friday. Harold Landry is among a trio of players not yet cleared for practice. Releasing second-year fullback Brock Lampe was also among the Patriots’ roster moves on Wednesday.
Everybody knows to watch the quarterback when the Patriots open training camp on Saturday. Drake Maye is coming off of a breakout season that vaulted him into the MVP discussion and the Patriots into Santa Clara for a Super Bowl appearance. Plus, he has new weapons to throw to in three-time Pro Bowler A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, who was Jordan Love’s favorite target in Green Bay last season.
The defensive standouts are obvious too.
