Fresh analysis of fossil footprints discovered at a site in Kenya has revised the longstanding understanding of Paranthropus boisei, an extinct hominin species historically nicknamed “Nutcracker Man” for its powerful jaw muscles and large teeth. According to CNN, updated calculations indicate that P. boisei was heavier and taller than previously believed, approaching humanlike proportions.
New Fossil Footprint Analysis Reveals Taller Paranthropus boisei
Prior estimates derived from fossil evidence suggested that male P. boisei individuals averaged about 4.2 feet (131 centimeters) in height and weighed approximately 108 pounds (49 kilograms). However, measurements based on the length and width of 21 newly identified footprints indicate that Nutcracker Man grew up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and weighed as much as 165 pounds (75 kilograms). According to reporting from Timeslive, these dimensions correspond to a height of up to 1.83 meters and a weight around 74.84 kilograms, allowing the species to rival Homo erectus in size.
Excavations at the Koobi Fora Formation
The newly analyzed tracks were uncovered at East Turkana’s Koobi Fora Formation. Seven of the tracks were initially unearthed during 1978 fieldwork led by Anna Katherine “Kay” Behrensmeyer, a senior research geologist and curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. Subsequent excavations conducted in 2016 and 2023 revealed 14 additional hominin footprints alongside tracks left by animals such as hippos and antelope.
Researchers used volcanic ash found in the surrounding rock to date the footprints to approximately 1.43 million years old. The well-defined tracks reach depths of up to 0.4 inches (12 centimeters) and were likely pressed into mud in shallow lake water.
Lead study author Kevin Hatala, an associate professor of biology at Chatham University in Pittsburgh and an associate researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, noted that the location provides a broad perspective on ancient life. Hatala said.
Insights Into Prehistoric Social Structure
Analysis of the footprint patterns indicates that the tracks were left by eight P. boisei individuals crossing the site together as a traveling group. Because of their size, researchers attributed the footprints to adult males.
According to study co-author and Harvard University evolutionary biologist Neil Roach, the findings offer a window into the social dynamics of the species. In certain primate and mammal groups, dominant males monopolize mating and drive other males away, which can force displaced males to travel together independently. The footprints suggest that P. boisei social structures similarly accommodated male-to-male tolerance under specific circumstances, showing that males sometimes traveled across the landscape in groups without females or children.
The research team published their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Coexistence With Homo erectus
Paranthropus boisei lived in eastern Africa from about 2.3 million to 1.2 million years ago and represents the last of three species belonging to the genus Paranthropus. It is also believed to be the final hominin species that was not part of the genus Homo.

For hundreds of thousands of years, P. boisei inhabited the Lake Turkana region alongside Homo erectus, a hominin more closely related to modern humans. A separate study led by Hatala, published in 2024, described fossil footprints in Kenya’s Turkana Basin made only days apart by both Homo erectus and P. boisei. While researchers cannot determine how the two species interacted on the mudflats, the evidence confirms they occupied the same landscape concurrently.
Paranthropus boisei eventually died out around 1.2 million years ago during a period of climate change that likely disrupted food resources, leaving the species an evolutionary dead end while Homo erectus and later Homo sapiens continued.
