While the precise astronomical moment of fullness occurred during daylight hours across North America, the moon appeared completely full to the naked eye both the night before and the night after. Observers across the UK enjoyed clear viewing conditions, with moonrise hitting at 8:07 p.m. In North America, the lunar disk cleared the eastern horizon around 8:30 p.m. local time, just after sunset.

July’s full moon carries multiple traditional names rooted in agriculture, wildlife, and indigenous heritage. Other historical designations include the Thunder Moon, referencing frequent midsummer storms, as well as the Hay Moon and Salmon Moon.

Photographers and stargazers captured striking images by leveraging the moon illusion, an optical phenomenon that makes the lunar disk appear significantly larger when viewed near the horizon alongside foreground landmarks.

Atmospheric conditions also altered the moon’s visual signature in various regions. Wildfire smoke stained the lunar disk a deep crimson over parts of Türkiye, while observers in North Carolina noted a warm amber hue. The moon has a definite warm tint likely caused by its low position in the sky, causing the light to pass through thicker layers of the atmosphere, Kevin McCarthy said after viewing the celestial event from his driveway in Charlotte, North Carolina, in an email to Space.com.

Navigating Lunar Surface Details and Telescope Challenges

While the full moon provides a brilliant spectacle for casual observers, astronomers note that it presents unique challenges for detailed telescope viewing. Astronomy Magazine pointed out that with the sun positioned high overhead from the lunar surface—marking high noon on the moon—the brightly lit face casts very few shadows, obscuring subtle topography.

Despite the glare, sharp-eyed stargazers used binoculars and telescopes to trace large dark volcanic plains known as maria, along with the bright rays of ejecta streaming outward from the prominent crater Tycho in the lunar southern hemisphere. Experts recommended using a Moon filter or sunglasses to reduce glare during telescopic observation.
