Elon Musk posted online that his company SpaceX has shifted its focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, making work on Mars a longer-term project according to Unherd. For years, reaching Mars had been a primary goal for Musk, who has advocated for the advanced colonisation of the planet since at least 2001 with the aim of making humanity multi-planetary.
SpaceX Shifts Focus Toward a Lunar City
Prior to this shift, Musk claimed that SpaceX would transport thousands of people to the Moon and Mars. Musk founded SpaceX with the explicit goal of making humanity a multi-planetary species as reported by AOL, and the SpaceX board has pledged to grant $1 billion in shares if Musk can create a colony of 1 million humans on Mars. Additionally, Forbes noted that Musk would receive 1 billion shares of the rocket maker in a pay package if the company reaches a market cap of $7.5 trillion and builds a colony on Mars with at least 1 million inhabitants.
Evaluating the Logistics of Extraterrestrial Settlement
The pivot to the Moon introduces a new set of propulsion and resource hurdles. Travelling one way from Earth to the lunar surface requires rocket propulsion that is 50% greater than the requirement to go to Mars. Furthermore, producing propellant on the Moon is significantly more difficult than on Mars, effectively tripling the propulsion requirements for a round trip.

While the Moon lacks basic ingredients for a viable settlement, Mars presents its own distinct set of severe environmental challenges for human habitation:

* Toxic Dust: Physicist and author Adam Becker noted that Martian dirt is very fine, toxic, and deadly, clinging to spacesuits and contaminating water, food, and habitats. * Radiation and Transit: A trip to Mars takes roughly six to nine months, exposing astronauts to prolonged weightlessness and radiation. * Atmospheric Limitations: Mars lacks a thick atmosphere and a magnetic field to block solar wind particles, and it does not have enough native material to create a breathable atmosphere without massive imports of air and water from Earth. * Low Gravity: Astronomer Alexei Filippenko of the University of California, Berkeley, pointed out biological obstacles such as giving birth and growing up in a low-gravity environment.
Alternative Motivations Behind the Lunar Pivot
Observers suggest that building a self-sustaining city on the Moon may not be the ultimate objective of the new lunar focus. Instead, a more plausible ambition for the lunar strategy is the creation of a vast AI data centre on the Moon, with the resulting returns used to bankroll the eventual settlement of Mars.
Such a move would follow the established pattern of previous ventures, where successful enterprises provided the capital and leverage to fund subsequent stages of development. However, building large-scale infrastructure in space faces immense financial and technical hurdles, including the extreme costs associated with space solar power compared to terrestrial energy alternatives.
