Skywatchers across North America and Europe can witness a rare double feature on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. A daytime partial or total solar eclipse precedes the annual peak of the Perseid meteor shower, which will unfold under a dark, moonless night sky offering up to 100 shooting stars per hour.
For observers across parts of North America and Europe, a single day will feature both a daytime solar eclipse and the nighttime peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Because a new moon coincides with the date, astronomers anticipate exceptionally dark skies for the meteor display.

The day’s first event begins during daylight hours. Alaska and the northeastern United States receive the best views in the U.S., with Fairbanks experiencing roughly 37% of the sun covered at approximately 8:27 a.m. AKDT. In the contiguous U.S., Maine records the largest partial eclipse, with Presque Isle reaching about 28% coverage around 1:50 p.m. EDT. Boston will see approximately 16% coverage at about 1:53 p.m., and New York City reaches about 10% around 1:54 p.m. EDT.
Across the Atlantic, the eclipse offers a more dramatic spectacle. Much of Europe experiences a deep partial eclipse, with London seeing about 91% of the sun covered and Paris seeing about 92%. Madrid and Barcelona fall just outside the path of totality, observing a 99% partial eclipse.

Viewing any partial solar phase requires certified eye protection. Binoculars, cameras, and telescopes require securely mounted solar filters over the front of their optics.
