Ukraine carried out overnight drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, hitting major energy infrastructure and military sites according to officials. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the Engels airfield and an oil refinery, both located in the Saratov region roughly 600 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, were struck during the operation. Additional overnight raids hit an oil depot in the Kaluga region and a drone launch site in Bryansk, while Ukrainian drones struck three Russian oil refineries, tankers on the Sea of Azov, and pipeline pumping stations.
Deep Drone Raids Target Russian Refineries and Airfield
Separate statements from Ukraine’s general staff and special forces detailed that drones hit the TANECO and TAIF-NK oil refineries in Tatarstan’s Nizhnekamsk, the Saratov oil refinery, and the Borisoglebsk military airbase in the Voronezh region. Furthermore, Kyiv reported striking a petroleum products pumping station in Bashkortostan, located 1,450 kilometers from Ukrainian-held territory. These operations follow a previous strike on the Omsk refinery, Russia’s largest, situated deep inside Siberia around 2,700 kilometers from Ukrainian territory.
Casualties and Defensive Response Reported
Russian officials confirmed strikes occurred across multiple regions following the widespread drone campaign. According to Moscow, eight people were killed in the Ukrainian strikes, and hundreds of incoming drones were intercepted or shot down, with the Russian Defence Ministry reporting 415 drones downed overnight alongside figures citing 635 total intercepts. Local authorities in Tatarstan noted that several people were wounded in Nizhnekamsk, while Saratov regional governor Roman Busargin reported on Telegram that one person was killed and several others were wounded in a strike damaging civilian industrial sites.
In the Voronezh region, Governor Alexander Gusev confirmed a strike that sparked a fire at an infrastructure object. Near the Ukrainian border, Belgorod regional governor Alexander Shuvaev stated that one person was killed and six were wounded in a drone strike on a frontier village. Meanwhile, Russia reported launching its own counter-attacks, stating that its forces targeted two Ukrainian ports and two vessels in the Black Sea overnight, alongside ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv that killed at least one person.
Impact on Energy Facilities and Shipping
The targeted facilities include some of Russia’s most critical and technologically advanced energy assets. Nizhnekamsk’s TANECO refinery features hydrocracking, catalytic cracking, and delayed coking units, having processed 17.0 million tons of crude oil in 2024 alongside TAIF-NK’s 6.6 million metric tons. Russia’s Gazprom also acknowledged that drones attacked the Krasnodarskaya pumping station, which helps send gas to Turkey via the Blue Stream pipeline, though exports remained unaffected.
In the Sea of Azov, a vital supply route for Russian forces in Crimea and southern Ukraine, Kyiv reported hitting nine oil tankers. Rostov region governor Yury Slyusar stated that two people were wounded in those maritime strikes and confirmed that two empty tankers were struck. Russia has suffered from acute fuel shortages in select regions due to the ongoing campaign against its oil infrastructure, as the conflict continues into its fifth year following the full-scale invasion launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
