Border Arrest Ends Year-Long Flight from Estonian Justice
Andrei Vesterinen is sitting in Tallinn Prison. The ArmyLaw OÜ owner and former Estonian Defense Forces servicemember—who lost a leg while serving in Afghanistan—was captured last week at the Latvian-Russian border, according to law enforcement reports.
He was detained on a European arrest warrant at the Grebņeva border checkpoint in eastern Latvia after crossing from Russia into EU territory. On Saturday, authorities handed him over to Estonian police at the Valga-Valka border.
Flight Risk Triggers Remand Behind Bars
Following his handover, a court on Monday ordered Vesterinen held in custody during criminal proceedings. The rationale was simple: he is a flight risk.
Vesterinen spent nearly a year avoiding criminal proceedings. That evasion prompted authorities to declare him wanted in Estonia last September after he repeatedly failed to appear at court hearings. An international arrest warrant ultimately forced his return.
The ArmyLaw OÜ Conscription Investigation
The criminal case targets ArmyLaw OÜ, the company owned by Vesterinen. Investigators suspect the firm offered paid legal services designed to help call-up selectees illegally avoid mandatory conscription in the Estonian Defense Forces (EDF).
Prosecutors pointed to the capture as proof that international searches and law enforcement cooperation deliver results, even when finding a suspect takes time.
