S&P 500 and Dow Hit Record Highs on AI Earnings and Middle East Diplomacy

Wall Street’s S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average hit record highs on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, driven by strong artificial intelligence-linked earnings from Caterpillar and Palantir, alongside easing crude prices following diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

Wall Street Indexes Reach Record Highs on AI Earnings and Middle East Hopes

U.S. markets climbed on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, as upbeat forecasts from key industrial and technology firms reassured investors about AI-driven demand. The benchmark S&P 500 reached an intraday record high for the first time since early June. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average also surged to fresh intraday record highs, while the Nasdaq Composite posted solid gains.

The positive momentum followed a turbulent July marked by valuation concerns and fluctuating tensions between the United States and Iran.

Caterpillar and Palantir Lead Artificial Intelligence Gains

Investor scrutiny this earnings season has centered on whether massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure are translating into actual revenue. Several major corporate reports on Tuesday provided a positive answer.

Palantir Technologies gained 17.4% after raising its annual revenue forecast once again. Meanwhile, Caterpillar rose 12% after boosting its annual revenue growth forecast. Regarded as a bellwether for the global industrial economy, Caterpillar benefited directly from the buildout of AI data centers, which has sharply increased demand for its power-generation and construction equipment.

Additional momentum came from the semiconductor sector. Chipmaker On Semiconductor added around 1% after forecasting quarterly revenue above expectations, while the broader Philadelphia Semiconductor index climbed roughly 4%.

“The AI earnings performance has been fantastic, but the big question that investors are asking themselves now is that if it’s going to be sustainable,”

Geopolitics and Commodity Markets Shift as Crude Prices Fall

Geopolitical developments provided a secondary boost to market sentiment by easing supply fears. Crude prices fell more than 2% after a Qatari official confirmed that diplomatic efforts to resolve the regional conflict were continuing. Adding to the optimism, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that an agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could materialize as early as Tuesday or Wednesday.

The broader second-quarter earnings season continues to outperform historical norms. Reuters reported that of the 304 companies in the S&P 500 that had reported earnings as of Friday, 85.2% beat estimates, outpacing the long-term average of 67.5%.

Upcoming Labor Data and Market Breadth

Market participants also turned their attention toward upcoming macroeconomic indicators. The Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey was scheduled for release at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, with economists expecting the data to show the economy created roughly 7.4 million jobs in June, down from 7.6 million in the previous month.

Despite the tech-driven surge lifting major indexes, market breadth remained mixed. Technology strength helped offset broader losses across the benchmark S&P 500, where seven of the 11 sectors traded lower led by a 2.5% decline in the energy sector.
