Despite the Brewers‘ willingness to assume the remainder of Skubal’s salary, the Detroit Tigers ultimately traded the pitcher to the Los Angeles Dodgers for three prospects.

Milwaukee Brewers leadership confirmed they were prepared to make a significant move to acquire Tarik Skubal, the former Detroit Tigers ace. General Manager Matt Arnold described the front office’s mindset during the trade deadline, stating they were prepared to push a lot of chips in
to secure the southpaw. Despite the intense interest, the deal did not materialize, as Detroit favored the offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
According to reporting from MLB.com, the Dodgers’ winning package included 21-year-old outfielder Zyhir Hope, 27-year-old right-hander River Ryan, and 21-year-old right-hander Brady Smith. While Milwaukee’s offer was considered highly competitive, the Tigers specifically targeted a controllable Major League pitcher—a requirement that reportedly complicated negotiations.
The Role of Luis Peña and Prospect Packages
The centerpiece of Milwaukee’s proposal was 19-year-old shortstop Luis Peña. Ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, Peña has been a standout performer for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers this season. Despite missing time due to a hamstring strain in June and a dehydration-related collapse in April, Peña has maintained a .295 batting average with 17 stolen bases.
The Brewers’ initial offer reportedly consisted of a trio of position players. Sources cited by MLB.com indicated that besides Peña, the package included infielder Jett Williams and outfielder Josh Adamczewski. The Brewers remained protective of other assets, specifically refusing to include right-hander Logan Henderson, who has posted a 5-1 record with a 2.66 ERA this season, or top-ranked shortstop Jesús Made.

Pivot to Post-Deadline Pitching Acquisitions
Following the unsuccessful pursuit of Skubal, the Brewers pivoted to bolster their pitching staff with three separate acquisitions before the deadline. The team secured right-handed starter Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals, as well as veteran reliever Antonio Senzatela from the Colorado Rockies. The package sent to Colorado for Senzatela included prospects Josiah Ragsdale and Alexander Frias.
These moves were designed to maintain Milwaukee’s standing in the National League, where they have spent the summer trading spots with the Dodgers at the top of the standings.
Future Implications for the NLCS
With Skubal now in Dodger blue, the organizations are set to meet next week in a four-game series at Dodger Stadium.
