An abandoned Falcon 9 rocket stage is projected to impact the Moon on Wednesday at 02:35 Eastern Time, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The collision stems from an unpredicted trajectory influenced by solar activity and gravitational forces acting on the space debris.

The upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket was originally launched in January of last year. According to NASA, the flight carried two lunar landers developed separately by private companies based in the United States and Japan.
Upon impact, the spent booster is expected to carve out a crater roughly 18 meters wide and 4 meters deep. The collision will eject approximately 360 ton of dust and rock into the lunar environment. Bruce Betts, chief scientist at the Planetary Society, stated that the resulting plume of debris could reach heights of tens of kilometers above the lunar surface.

NASA officials confirmed that the strike poses no danger to Earth. Instead, the agency plans to actively observe the impact to gather empirical data on lunar geology. This information is intended to support future crewed and uncrewed missions to the Moon.
