President Connolly Opens Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Belfast

For the first time in its history, the annual Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is taking place in Belfast, marking only the second time the festival has been hosted in Northern Ireland following Derry in 2013. President Connolly attended the opening events on Sunday, noting that the gathering unites musicians and dancers from different traditions. According to Connolly, the event celebrates the universality of music, sound, and dance, as well as what communities hold in common.

During her visit on Wednesday, Connolly toured the city via a Belfast Bike and met local mural artist and illustrator Danni Simpson. Simpson shared her hand-painted map of Ireland with the President on Commercial Court, a popular cobbled alley in the city centre. Simpson noted in an Instagram post that Belfast has come to life during the festival, describing the experience of showing her artwork to the President as a rare occasion.
