Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of the England Lions. The 48-year-old, who assumed leadership of the developmental squad in September 2024, thanked England managing director Rob Key for trusting him with the role before pivoting to franchise commitments in Australia.
Flintoff Departs Lions for Sydney Thunder Coaching Role
Andrew Flintoff’s exit from the national setup follows his appointment in June as head coach of the Australian Big Bash franchise Sydney Thunder. The position marks his first overseas T20 coaching role. Flintoff was initially scheduled to balance both positions, which would have required him to leave a planned Lions tour of South Africa early to join the Thunder.
Instead, the former all-rounder has chosen to vacate his domestic post entirely. “Unfortunately I’ve made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions,” Flintoff said in his leaving statement. He added that he took great pride in seeing young players develop and thanked the coaching staff for their tireless work.
Did you know? Before taking charge of the England Lions, Andrew Flintoff spent two seasons coaching the Northern Superchargers men’s team in The Hundred, leading the Leeds-based franchise to fourth and third-placed finishes.
ECB Response and Upcoming Lions Fixtures
England and Wales Cricket Board men’s performance director Ed Barney praised Flintoff’s impact on the developmental setup. According to Barney, “Fred has helped to transform the Lions environment into a programme that has had a major impact on young players.” Barney also noted that coaches flourished alongside him during his tenure.
Mike Yardy will step in as head coach. Yardy leads the Professional County Club Select XI for a four-day warm-up match against Pakistan beginning Wednesday, 12 August, at Beckenham ahead of their three-Test series. The Lions are also scheduled to serve as opposition for Sri Lanka in two T20 warm-up fixtures in September.
