The Edinburgh festival fringe has defended its position after facing widespread calls to cancel a sold-out comedy show by Amanda Knox. Knox, who is 39 years old, was wrongfully convicted alongside her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito for the 2007 murder and sexual assault of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher, in Perugia, Italy. Following years of legal battles, Knox and Sollecito were ultimately acquitted by Italy’s highest court in 2015.

Knox’s solo stand-up show, titled Cartwheel,
is scheduled to run for 11 days from August 7 to August 17 at the TODAY.com festival in Scotland. The title references unproven reports that Knox allegedly did cartwheels in a police station following Kercher’s death.
Family Outrage and Online Petitions
The performance has drawn intense criticism from the family of Meredith Kercher. Stephanie Kercher, the sister of the victim, told BBC Breakfast that Knox is free to live her life, but expressed deep concern that the project uses comedy to address the tragedy.

An online petition initiated by a friend of Stephanie Kercher has gathered thousands of signatures calling for the performance to be axed. Critics argue that the production mocks the harrowing events surrounding the murder and disrespects Kercher’s memory. Rudy Guede was separately convicted of Kercher’s murder in 2008 and later released in 2021 after serving 13 years of a 16-year sentence.
Knox Defends Performance and Fringe Venue Response
Responding to the backlash via Instagram, Knox asserted that neither the petition’s author nor anyone who signed it had actually witnessed the material.
Cartwheel is a show about motherhood, raising a daughter in a world that is unfair and dangerous for women, and what it costs to be the kind of mother who tells her the truth about that,
Knox wrote, stating that the petition relies on false assumptions and mischaracterizes the act. She added: Cartwheel honours Meredith Kercher’s memory and calls out the violence that was done to her and to me.
Show listings describe the performance as an exploration of motherhood, wrongful imprisonment, and how Knox plans to explain her past to her young daughter. Knox has previously stated, I don’t joke about Meredith’s death. I joke a lot about how I was vilified, but I don’t joke about her murder.
Festival Organizers Uphold Freedom of Expression
Addressing the cancellation demands, Tony Lankester, the director of the Fringe Society, told ca.news.yahoo.com that the open-access festival is not afraid of controversy.
Lankester explained that programming decisions rest with individual artists and venues rather than the central Fringe Society, which merely provides ticketing services.
The decision as to whether or not [the show] goes ahead lies with herself and it lies with the venue,
Lankester said. He noted that while organizers feel deep sympathy for the pain experienced by the Kercher family, emotional distress cannot serve as a governing criterion for festival programming. The only hard boundary enforced by organizers, according to Lankester, involves legal limits against hate speech, incitement to violence, or law-breaking.
The venue hosting the production, Gilded Balloon Teviot, emphasized its longstanding commitment to freedom of expression within legal boundaries, noting that independent artists take full creative and financial responsibility for their material while offering audiences the opportunity to make informed choices.
