Large predators actively reshape the spatial use and daily routines of local prey populations. Justin Suraci of Conservation Science Partners in Truckee, California, and lead author of the study, explained that carnivores provide a direct ecosystem service to human communities.
“We found that large carnivores can make roadways safer through their effects on prey behaviour and space use,” Suraci said in a press release. “Deer alter their use of both space and time where pumas are present, overlapping less with roads and reducing activity at night, when some of the most dangerous collisions occur.”
Data gathered by the research team showed that deer are 15% less likely to spend time near roadways in areas populated by pumas. Instead, the animals retreat into remote habitat areas. This behavioral shift results in a 67% overall reduction in the statistical likelihood of a deer-vehicle collision.
