“These signs reveal a surprisingly structured, geometric way of thinking,” says Silvia Ferrara, Professor at the University of Bologna’s Department of Classical Philology and Italian Studies, who coordinated the study. Ferrara notes that the creators organized lines through parallelisms, grids, rotations, and systematic repetitions to form an embryonic visual grammar.
More elaborate motifs on the fragments include hatched bands, diamond-shaped patterns, and embedded geometric configurations. This layering points to hierarchical organization, according to the research team. “There is not only a process of repeating signs: there is real visuo-spatial planning, as if the authors already had an overall image of the figure in mind before engraving it,” Ferrara explains.
Valentina Decembrini, a PhD student at the University of Bologna and first author of the study, highlights the cognitive significance of these findings. “Our analysis shows that Homo sapiens 60,000 years ago already possessed a remarkable ability to organize visual space according to abstract principles,” Decembrini notes. The study, titled “Earliest Geometries. A Cognitive Investigation of Howiesons Poort Engraved Ostrich Eggshells,” represents a joint effort by Valentina Decembrini, Ludovica Ottaviano, Mattia Cartolano, Enza Elena Spinapolice, and Silvia Ferrara. The investigation operated under the framework of the FIS Advanced project SAPIENCE (Symbols, Preliteracy and Code Evolution), directed by Professor Ferrara in collaboration with Professor Enza Spinapolice of Sapienza University of Rome.
By shifting the focus from individual symbolic meanings to the underlying cognitive rules required for execution, the researchers provide a reproducible framework for studying prehistoric artifacts. Quantitative spatial analysis confirms that Pleistocene hunter-gatherers mastered complex rule-based design long before the advent of formal writing.
