According to the clinical assessments, ulcers over the hands and feet were the most common manifestation, affecting 23.3 percent of the cohort. Absorption of digits followed closely at 20 percent, banana fingers at 13.3 percent, claw hand and nerve thickening at 10 percent each, madarosis, Buddha ear, and leonine facies at 6.7 percent each, and foot drop at 3.3 percent.

The authors noted that the high incidence of foot and hand ulcers is directly linked to damage to the peripheral nerves caused by Mycobacterium leprae.
