Trump Concedes Contractor Error in Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovations

Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated that the landmark “will be open shortly” following ongoing repairs. As with many jobs, there was also some contractor error done by rushing the job for a July 4th opening, but it was a very small area of this massive Pool, and was relatively inconsequential, he wrote.

The project initially carried an estimate under $2 million, but costs have since climbed past $16 million, reported The Guardian. The Department of the Interior awarded the renovation without competitive bidding due to the strict Independence Day deadline.

Legal Fallout Over Dismissed Vandalism Charges

The presidential acknowledgment follows a legal clash involving the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and several individuals accused of damaging the site, including former Olympic canoeist David Hearn. Trump had previously insisted the peeling American flag blue liner and green algae blooms were the deliberate work of saboteurs, noted ABC7.

However, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office moved to drop the criminal charges after discovering documents indicating a flawed installation process. In a July 31 court filing, prosecutors stated that the damage was the result of flawed installation by the contractor … and the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration, detailed USA Today.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman formally dismissed charges against Hearn, while prosecutors faced sharp criticism from the president. Trump publicly lashed out at Pirro, asserting that she needed to revisit her decision. Despite conceding some contractor error, Trump maintained that other damage was intentional, even while acknowledging on social media that there was no video or proof, other than the damage, itself, reported The Hill. Hearn’s legal team criticized the continued allegations, noting that initial photographic evidence proved their client did not damage the pool.

Golf Club Manager’s Involvement and Supply Chain Hurdles

Investigations into the project’s origins revealed that David Schutzenhofer, manager of the Trump Organization’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, was chosen by Trump to lead the renovation, according to an investigation by the New York Times cited by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Schutzenhofer lacks formal training in architecture or engineering.

Seeking ideas at a Las Vegas trade show in January, Schutzenhofer connected with Rodney Jarboe, president of Missouri-based Creative Polymers. Jarboe stated that Schutzenhofer pushed for a polyurea coating under a tight timeline for the Fourth of July. Because presidential tariffs complicated the procurement of polyurea, Jarboe partnered with California-based Rhino Linings, which enlisted Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings to help apply the lining.

Soon after the administration declared the project finished in early June, the blue coating began to peel, requiring the pool to be drained. Trump added that additional security cameras have been and are being installed around the site.
