Irish Drink Brand VitHit Sold to Vimto Owner for €75M

Irish functional drinks brand VitHit has been acquired for €75 million by Nichols, the UK-based company behind Vimto, in an all-cash debt-free deal that sees founder Gary Lavin step down from day one, according to corporate disclosures and statements released by both firms.

VitHit Acquisition Details and Financials

Founded in 2000 by Gary Lavin, VitHit produces low-calorie, low-sugar vitamin drinks sold in Ireland, the UK, and 13 other markets. According to Nichols, the brand generated €26.5 million in revenue and an adjusted operating profit of €4.2 million for the financial year ended December 31. The acquisition was funded entirely through cash on Nichols’ balance sheet on a debt-free, cash-free basis. Nichols stated that the deal is expected to be immediately earnings-enhancing and will generate returns comfortably exceeding the group’s cost of capital.

Leadership Changes and Founder Reaction

As part of the transaction, Nichols will retain VitHit’s Dublin office and selected members of its management team, though some will depart following a transition period. Founder and chair Gary Lavin stepped down immediately upon completion of the deal. In a public statement posted to LinkedIn, Lavin reflected on starting the company from a van more than two decades ago. “The company I started in 2000 from a van is finally sold,” Lavin wrote, describing Nichols as a group that will provide the investment and distribution the brand has craved. Lavin also noted that VitHit achieved its growth without ever taking outside funding, selling over 40 million units annually to rank as the seventh-biggest soft drink in Ireland and the top vitamin drink in the UK.

Strategic Fit for Nichols

Nichols Chief Executive Officer Andrew Milne stated that the acquisition represents a significant milestone in the group’s strategy to selectively invest in differentiated soft drinks brands. According to Nichols, the purchase strengthens the company’s position within the health and wellness segment of the soft drinks market. Milne noted that VitHit benefits from high customer loyalty and a strong functional portfolio, adding that Nichols plans to leverage its commercial capabilities, customer relationships, and international infrastructure to expand VitHit’s distribution across existing customer bases.
