A ninth-grade student was shot in the leg following a physical altercation in a bathroom at Warner Robins High School on Wednesday afternoon. A 14-year-old suspect fled the scene and was apprehended approximately an hour later. The incident prompted a school lockdown, emergency medical response, and class cancellations for the rest of the week.
An argument between two students inside a campus restroom escalated into gunfire on Wednesday afternoon at Warner Robins High School, roughly 102 miles southeast of Atlanta, according to local law enforcement. The shooting occurred just one week and one day into the new school year, drawing a massive deployment of local and state officers to the campus.
Bathroom Altercation and Rapid Law Enforcement Response
The confrontation began as a verbal dispute among a group of students inside a school restroom before turning physical, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office reported. During the fight, a 14-year-old ninth-grade student brandished a firearm and shot another ninth-grader in the leg. The shooting took place at approximately 2:15 p.m.
A school resource deputy reached the injured student within seconds and applied tourniquets to stanch the bleeding before emergency medical personnel arrived, Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton said during an evening news conference.
The wounded student was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to apnews.com. Authorities have not released the identities of either student involved.
Manhunt and Apprehension in Huntington Hills
Following the gunfire, the teenage suspect fled the school grounds in an unknown direction. Law enforcement officers reviewed campus surveillance footage and initiated a perimeter search of the surrounding area.
Roughly an hour after the incident, officers located the suspect in the Huntington Hills neighborhood about a half-mile away from the campus. The 14-year-old was taken into custody without further incident at approximately 3:20 p.m., police confirmed. Roads surrounding the high school, including Demon Valley Road and S. Davis Drive, experienced temporary closures during the active investigation.
Moulton added that swift protocol adherence minimized what could have been a much worse incident.
Lockdown, Controlled Dismissal, and Community Reaction
As the situation unfolded, the Houston County School District placed Warner Robins High School under a Code Red lockdown, securing all students and staff inside their classrooms. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter landed on campus as part of the emergency response.
The district later initiated a controlled dismissal, releasing students in a safe and orderly manner
in phased stages. Buses were loaded first, followed by car riders, student drivers, and walkers, while law enforcement officers maintained a visible presence on site.
State leaders expressed gratitude for the prompt response from first responders. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp stated that their actions quickly brought the situation under control and kept students and faculty safe. U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock also shared messages of support, offering prayers for those affected and the wider Warner Robins community.
Class Cancellations and Support Services Scheduled
Warner Robins High School Principal Brett Wallace announced that the campus will be closed to all students on Thursday and Friday, with no virtual learning scheduled during the closure.
Student Services will provide additional counselors and support staff onsite on both Friday and Monday for any student or staff member needing assistance. Superintendent Richard Rogers emphasized that the district’s immediate priority moving forward is focusing on community healing.
