On Aug. 13, the Space Systems Command announced that Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab, and York Space Systems were each awarded $12 million via prototype agreements and contracts. The initiative focuses on validating integration methodologies and testing whether diverse commercial architectures can seamlessly link to the core SDN system, as stated by Col. Ryan Frazier, acting portfolio acquisition executive for Space Based Sensing and Targeting.
Frazier noted in a statement that investing in standardized interfaces creates a clear runway for any capable and innovative company to compete. The funding addresses how external systems connect to the SpaceX backbone, a central priority in the military’s strategy to avoid relying on a single provider for the network’s long-term expansion.
Testing Multi-Vendor Data Transport in Low Earth Orbit
The nine-month prototyping phase will test ground-to-space and space-to-space data transport across the mesh communications architecture in low Earth orbit. According to Space Systems Command details, the demonstrations will evaluate standardized interfaces that allow different commercial providers to operate across the same network infrastructure.
