Christian Walker hit a mammoth 405-foot walk-off three-run home run off closer Andrés Muñoz, capping a five-run 10th inning as the Houston Astros stunned the Seattle Mariners 10-7 on Friday night at Daikin Park to secure a wild extra-inning victory.
For a team that had lost 10 of their last 11 matchups with Seattle dating back to last season’s division race, the game followed a familiar, painful script before turning entirely on its head in the 10th inning.
The Mariners arrived in Houston looking to salvage their footing in a sliding stretch, having lost 21 of their previous 31 games dating back to July 5. For nine innings, it looked like they had found the exact remedy. After falling behind early, Seattle chipped away, took the lead, and handed the ball to one of the most reliable bullpen arms in the American League to close the door.
Early Offense and George Kirby’s Struggles Against Houston
The game started with high-voltage swings on both sides. Randy Arozarena opened the game with a double to left field and crossed the plate on Dominic Canzone’s RBI single. A subsequent double by Julio Rodríguez and a sacrifice fly from Josh Naylor staked the Mariners to a 2-0 lead against Astros starting pitcher Peter Lambert.
That advantage evaporated instantly. In the bottom of the first, Yordan Alvarez broke his 13-game homerless drought by clubbing his league-leading 36th home run of the season off Mariners starter George Kirby. The second inning proved disastrous for Kirby, who entered the night with a sterling career ERA against Houston. The Astros strung together six consecutive baserunners, highlighted by an unlucky triple from Cam Smith that skipped past a diving Brendan Donovan and allowed Christian Walker to scamper home from first.
Houston capitalized on a walk to Christian Vázquez and a soft RBI single by Jeremy Peña, followed by a walk to Alvarez and an erratic defensive play by Donovan on Isaac Paredes’ bases-loaded chopper that scored two more runs. Kirby labored through a 30-plus pitch frame, leaving Seattle in a 5-2 hole before their bullpen completely locked down the middle frames.
Seattle Bullpen Brilliance and Late-Inning Resurgence
While the Mariners’ offense worked to erase the deficit, their relief corps delivered a masterclass in shutdown pitching. Michael Rucker, Gabe Speier, and Eduard Bazardo combined for 5 1/3 perfect innings, freezing the Houston bats and allowing the Seattle lineup to claw back. Brock Rodden delivered his first major-league hit in the eighth inning—a ground-rule double that brought home the tying run.
In the 10th inning, the Mariners appeared to seize complete control against the Houston bullpen. Victor Robles lashed a go-ahead triple into the left-center gap off Enyel De Los Santos, driving in automatic runner Brendan Donovan. Rodden followed with a sacrifice fly to extend Seattle’s lead to 7-5, setting up closer Andrés Muñoz for the final three outs.
Andrés Muñoz and the Dramatic 10th-Inning Collapse
What looked like a secured victory turned into a nightmare for Seattle’s bullpen anchor. Muñoz, carrying a sparkling 0.93 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over his previous 19 appearances, quickly retired Taylor Trammell for the second out of the 10th. With the Astros down to their final strike twice, the game fractured.
Isaac Paredes sparked the rally with an RBI single off a 101.2 mph fastball. After Muñoz got ahead 0-2 on Jose Altuve, the second baseman reached down to poke a low, out-of-zone slider into right field to put runners at the corners.
That brought up Christian Walker, who wasted no time. The first baseman jumped on the second pitch he saw from Muñoz—another slider—and launched it a Statcast-projected 405 feet to left field for his third career walk-off home run. The blast matched Muñoz’s career high of five earned runs allowed in a single outing.
The stunning reversal leaves the Mariners at 57-66, sitting six games back in the American League West.
