New Zealand is facing its first taste of a fast-intensifying El Niño weather pattern this weekend, with forecasters warning the Pacific climate phenomenon could become the strongest on record over the past 100 years. Emergency services, health officials, and agricultural leaders are already ramping up preparations for dry conditions, severe gales, and heightened wildfire risks that could persist through 2026 and into 2027.
First Taste of El Niño Weather Arrives This Weekend
Weather patterns are shifting quickly as a couple of fronts, embedded in a strong and moist northwest flow, move across the country. Chris Brandolino of Earth Sciences NZ stated that the approaching weather system will deliver heavy downpours to the West Coast alongside strong, damaging winds across extensive areas of the South Island and the lower North Island.
Rainfall modelling through the end of September points to a dry North Island alongside the top and east of the South Island. Northland, Auckland, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty are expected to experience below-average rainfall, while Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa, Marlborough, the top of the South Island, and Canterbury face an elevated risk. Conversely, the western and lower South Island could see wetter conditions build into excess rainfall by October and November. Additionally, wind events dragging warm air off Australia may produce short, sharp bursts of unusually high temperatures.
Firefighters Stockpile Retardant and Gear Up Early
To combat potential blazes fuelled by wind, elevated temperatures, and a lack of rainfall, Fire and Emergency NZ has begun preparations early. Crews have checked equipment and increased foam and retardant stocks by 20,000 litres, bringing total capacity to 120,000 litres. Operational readiness has been reviewed, and resources such as aviation, drones, and specialist crews can be pre-positioned between regions alongside support from the Department of Conservation, forestry partners, and the Defence Force.
With human activity responsible for roughly 98% of all blazes across New Zealand, a representative for Fire and Emergency NZ called on property holders to clear away dry brush, maintain unobstructed routes for emergency responders, and make sure water sources like tanks remain easily reachable.
Farmers Urged to Make Early Decisions on Stock and Feed
The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) is working actively with sector groups, dairy organisations, and Beef + Lamb New Zealand to assist farmers and growers. MPI’s Andrew Curtis advised farmers to make decisions early, which includes identifying feed deficits, assessing summer feed crop potential, and prioritising livestock for early destocking while feeding the remainder effectively. Lifestyle block owners are also advised to create dry-weather plans to address drought risks, heat stress in animals, and wildfires.
Drinking Water Supplies Put on Watch
Extended dry conditions threaten to put pressure on rivers, streams, reservoirs, and aquifers. Taumata Arowai head of operations Steve Taylor noted that north and eastern areas face the highest risk of shortages, particularly smaller and rural communities relying on rainwater tanks, shallow groundwater, or small community schemes. Taylor advised suppliers to engage with communities early, while households should follow local water-saving advice, report leaks, fix household leaks, and store emergency drinking water.
Health Officials Warn of Heat and Smoke Risks
Last week’s national readiness forum brought together about 200 groups where participants were informed that the climate phenomenon might stretch right through 2026 and onward into 2027. Babies, older people, disabled individuals, and those with serious long-term health conditions face the greatest risk. Officials recommend staying indoors or in the shade, limiting physical activity, keeping up fluids, and seeking air-conditioned spaces like libraries or shopping malls if homes cannot stay cool.
Uncertainty Surrounds the Behaviour of the El Niño
While meteorologists are looking back at previous “super” El Niño events from 1972-73, 1982-83, 1997-98, and 2015-16 to anticipate impacts, Brandolino cautioned that historical comparisons carry uncertainty. The Earth itself is significantly warmer than it was during the events of the early 1970s and 1980s, leaving experts unsure how higher global temperatures will ultimately influence the current cycle.
