Kit Harington to Replace Nicholas Hoult in Harry Potter TV Series

Kit Harington will replace Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart for the second season of HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, according to announcements made by the production on Instagram. Hoult, 36, exited the role just weeks after his casting was announced, citing scheduling conflicts.

Casting Shakeup for Season Two

The production confirmed the casting change on the official Harry Potter Instagram page, stating that Harington would step into the role due to a “slight change due to schedule,” according to the Press Association. Hoult was originally announced for the role in an HBO Max social media post on August 12. Harington, 39, is already familiar with the character, having previously voiced Lockhart for Audible’s 2025 audiobooks.

“It was a really simple yes, because I love the character,” Harington told Variety regarding his initial involvement with the audio adaptations. “As far as cameos in a series go, you don’t get much more entertaining and fun to do as an actor than Gilderoy Lockhart. It was a no-brainer.”

Did You Know? Gilderoy Lockhart was originally played on film by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 Chamber of Secrets film.

Broader Production Changes

The recasting follows another recent departure from the series. According to the Press Association, the role of Ginny Weasley is also being recast for the second season due to “unforeseen circumstances,” resulting in the departure of actress Gracie Cochrane.
