Unitree’s Post-Listing Slump Sparks China Robot Bubble Fears

Unitree shares slumped 45% from their debut peak in late August, dropping by $30 billion after soaring to an early $66 billion valuation on the Shanghai STAR Market, according to Reuters. The steep post-listing selloff for China’s best-known humanoid robot maker has triggered widespread regulatory and investor anxiety over retail losses, retail trading frenzies, and structural flaws in China’s initial public offering system.

Shanghai IPO Frenzy and the Unitree Valuation Collapse

Unitree finished up 460% on its debut trading day, far outpacing the average first-day gain of 226% for newly listed stocks in China over the preceding three years, according to Reuters data.

Yet the soaring market capitalization quickly unraveled. Unitree shares steadied on Tuesday following three consecutive days of heavy losses that erased nearly half of their peak value. Venture capitalist Abraham Zhang of China Europe Capital told Reuters that the debut performance “was not fuelled by a rosy prospect, but a desire by some to pump up the shares so as to dump them later at lofty prices.” Regulatory filings showed that Unitree’s adjusted net profit fell 53% to 40 million yuan ($5.95 million) in the first three months of 2026, highlighting a downshift in earnings even as the stock price skyrocketed.

Structural Flaws in China’s Listing Mechanism

Market analysts and fund managers have pointed to systemic design flaws in mainland China’s IPO vetting and pricing framework as a primary driver of the volatility. Chinese stock exchanges not only vet listing hopefuls but also issue strict guidance on IPO pricing, which limits the flexibility of underwriters to manage feverish investor demand. Dong Baozhen, chairman of Beijing-based asset manager Lingtong Shengtai, told Reuters that the staggering gap between official IPO prices and debut surges proves one of them is fundamentally wrong, adding that “all bubbles are doomed to burst.”

Because short-selling activities are heavily restricted on mainland exchanges, overpriced listings face virtually no immediate downward pushback from market bears. Hedge fund manager Yuan Yuwei of Trinity Synergy Investments told Reuters that an IPO stock priced initially at 10 yuan can easily open at 100 yuan before sliding for years, calling the dynamic a “rip-off.” While retail investors chase strategic state-backed sectors amid Beijing’s drive for technological self-sufficiency, venture capitalist Zhang warned that loopholes allow major early shareholders to cash out while shifting financial risks entirely onto mom-and-pop traders.

Long-Term Outlook for China’s Humanoid Robotics Sector

Despite the short-term market turbulence and regulatory scrutiny, industry backers argue that early financial metrics do not capture the long-term potential of China’s robotics industry. Gao Xingkun, a fund manager at China Southern Asset Management Co., told an online roadshow covered by Reuters that evaluating robotics firms strictly on current profit is unfair, drawing a direct parallel to the early development stages of China’s now-booming electric vehicle market.
