A fisherman on the remote Cook Islands reef of Mitiaro discovered 19 packages of cocaine weighing more than 26 kilograms on July 28, according to RNZ Pacific. Cook Islands Police later confirmed the contents through testing in Rarotonga, as local authorities investigate the origin of the illicit shipment and Customs strengthens vessel monitoring across the region.
Discovery of the Cocaine Package on Mitiaro Reef
The fisherman, whose identity has been withheld by RNZ Pacific, encountered the suspicious cargo while routine reef fishing. Initially, he mistook the object for a shark-killed turtle washed ashore. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a package and poked it with his fishing rod, causing a packet to fall out. Fearing the object might be a chopped-up human body or a bomb that could explode, he left the area to continue fishing, according to his account given to RNZ Pacific.
After finishing his catch on shore, the fisherman worried high tide would wash the item away and reported the find to a local police officer. The officer and a couple of young men retrieved the main package and two loose packets that had drifted further ashore due to rough seas. The group brought the items to a police officer’s house and cut into the sack, finding 17 packets inside along with the two recovered from the shoreline, totaling 19 packets.
Police Investigation and Testing in Rarotonga
Authorities transported the seized materials to Rarotonga for official examination. According to Cook Islands Police press statements, preliminary testing indicated the presence of cocaine. In total, officers recovered 19 bricks weighing approximately 26.49 kilograms, including the packaging.
Police are actively investigating the source of the package and examining whether the shipment connects to other criminal investigations. In response to the discovery, Cook Islands Customs has heightened vessel monitoring and intensified searches. Police praised the fisherman and the Mitiaro community for their cooperation and warned the public never to touch suspicious packages, advising citizens to contact law enforcement immediately.

The fisherman voiced strong concerns regarding what the incident signals for Mitiaro and the wider Cook Islands. Located roughly 50 minutes by air from Rarotonga, Mitiaro could see heightened security measures as investigators trace maritime routes. The fisherman suggested the drugs may have been dropped in the sea for another ship or yacht to retrieve, or intentionally set adrift to wash ashore.
As the investigation continues, authorities are likely to expand vessel checks across nearby waters to identify potential trafficking routes.
