The Salina Family YMCA’s Wellness Warriors program provides free fitness training and community support for cancer patients and survivors. Led by certified Cancer Exercise Specialist Andi Kilsch, the initiative addresses the physical and emotional challenges of recovery by offering personalized exercise plans and peer connections.
Program Structure and Fitness Focus for Cancer Recovery
Recovery from cancer involves more than medical treatment, requiring opportunities to regain physical strength, confidence, and connection. The Wellness Warriors program meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1pm-2pm, starting Sept. 21 (12-week program). Participants work with tailored routines designed to improve strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance.
The free program includes a 3-month membership at the Y for the duration of the program. According to program details, lead trainer Andi Kilsch holds an ACE certification and specializes in cancer exercise, creating an environment where participants feel comfortable and capable during and after medical treatment.
Building Community and Emotional Support Among Survivors
Beyond physical workouts, the Wellness Warriors initiative fosters a strong sense of belonging and renewed optimism among participants. Attendees frequently share experiences and build mutual support networks, developing lasting friendships that extend well beyond the program. The impact of this community draws dedicated attendance, with one participant regularly driving two hours each way to attend.
“One of the most rewarding aspects of this program is seeing participants discover what they’re capable of and support one another along the way,” Andi Kilsch said. YMCA staff credit Kilsch’s expertise and genuine care for creating an environment where participants feel comfortable, capable, and supported.
