Fire Triggers Devastation in Islamabad Maternity Ward
The fire broke out just before 7:00 a.m. local time on the third floor of the PIMS maternal and child health wing, according to the capital’s municipal administration. Islamabad’s commissioner reported that rescue teams and police arrived immediately to control the blaze, while the hospital confirmed in a written statement that the fire was swiftly contained.
According to the newspaper Dawn, emergency responders deployed six fire engines and four ambulances to the scene. While official reports confirm 15 fatalities, municipal authorities warn the death toll could climb. According to city administrators, 16 infants were in the ward’s nursery on incubators or ventilators when the fire started, and responders managed to rescue only one baby. A doctor on duty successfully saved a single infant, according to hospital accounts.
The disaster ranks among the deadliest hospital fires in Pakistan in recent years. In a public statement, police announced that due to the severity of the burns and conditions at the scene, DNA testing will be required to positively identify the victims.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound sorrow over the deaths and ordered an immediate, thorough inquiry into the incident. “A situation like that, involving children, is irreparably tragic,” Sharif said in an official communication.
Health Minister Mustafa Kamal noted that the concentration of oxygen cylinders in the gynaecology and neonatal ward heavily contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Institute spokesperson Aneeza Jalil stated that preliminary findings point to an electrical short-circuit in the air-conditioning system as the ignition source.
