The U.S. military is confronting severe munitions shortages across multiple theaters following months of intense combat operations in the Middle East. According to a U.S. defense official in Europe and a NATO official who spoke to the press on condition of anonymity, American and allied forces are grappling with low inventories of Patriots among forces stationed throughout the continent.

The current strain on air defense stockpiles illustrates the cascading fallout from President Donald Trump’s decision to launch a military campaign against Iran, a conflict that reached the six-month mark on Friday. U.S. missile stocks previously stationed in Europe were shifted to the Middle East, where American forces and Gulf allies have fired off significant numbers of interceptors to thwart incoming Iranian drones and missiles.

Vulnerability Risks for NATO and European Defenses

The most concerning shortfall centers on Patriot missile interceptors, which remain essential for shooting down high-speed ballistic missiles. In the event of a sudden ballistic missile assault targeting vital infrastructure such as a military headquarters or a power plant, NATO could find itself in a position similar to Ukraine, where forces have struggled with acute air defense deficits.

One defense official warned that the alliance could be forced to take punch after punch in the mouth during an air assault. The American military in Europe definitely lacks enough Patriots to stop a sustained ballistic missile attack and retains only very limited capability to intercept a single stray strike or off-course projectile, the official noted.

European and NATO planners estimate that Russia could be capable of mounting an attack against alliance members by 2030, by which point Patriot stockpiles are projected to rebound. Army has exhausted much of its global stockpile of surface-to-surface long-range precision munitions. Three sources familiar with internal government data reported that the military has used virtually all of its Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) during the conflict in the Middle East.

These long-range munitions cost more than $1 million each and provide the military with the ability to execute accurate strikes from a safe distance. The rapid depletion of these stockpiles leaves the administration with fewer standoff options, potentially forcing a greater reliance on riskier piloted bombing missions if large-scale strikes resume.

President Trump echoed confidence in domestic manufacturing capacity, stating that defense contractors are producing interceptors and munitions at record levels and expanding plants and equipment. Analysts agree that production lines are active, but caution that current manufacturing rates may still fall short of what is required to sustain a prolonged war of attrition.
