The September 4 episode of SmackDown delivers a completely unexpected main event taped on August 28 at the Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. CM Punk crossed paths with Johnny Gargano backstage in Gargano’s hometown and offered him a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship, prompting the challenger to spring out of a comedic planking position and accept the bout. WWE is currently taping both the August 31 Raw and the September 4 SmackDown at the Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, doubling up both shows on the same day to give the crew and Superstars some downtime. During a backstage segment taped for SmackDown, Punk crossed paths with Gargano and offered him a shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship. Shortly after, WWE displayed the official match graphic on the screens inside the Rocket Arena, confirming CM Punk vs. Johnny Gargano for later that night.
WWE actually planted the seeds for this one a few weeks back. On the August 7 SmackDown, Punk told Sami Zayn during a backstage exchange that he would give a title opportunity to either Gargano or Candice LeRae before giving Zayn another crack at the championship. Gargano’s selection carries extra weight given the setting. Johnny Wrestling is a Cleveland native who has always had a strong connection to the city. CM Punk defeated Johnny Gargano to retain the WWE Championship. After the match, Punk offered Zayn a title match in Mexico City on September 11.
Charlotte Flair, Tatum Paxley, and Fatal Influence Build to Sunday Night’s Main Event
The women’s division scene on the blue brand is heavily tied to the upcoming Sunday Night’s Main Event. Fatal Influence faced Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley in a tag team match. Flair and Paxley picked up the victory, but Jade Cargill and the rest of Fatal Influence got their heat ahead of Sunday Night’s Main Event. The match set up a six-woman tag team match at Sunday Night’s Main Event, with Charlotte Flair, Tatum Paxley & Alexa Bliss taking on Jade Cargill, B-Fab & Michin.
Chelsea Green Confronts Nia Jax Ahead of Mexico City Clash
WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green came to the ring with a doctor and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis to address her injury. Nia Jax and Lash Legend interrupted, with Nia set to face Tiffany Stratton. Nia picks up the victory. It was then announced that Chelsea will defend her title against Nia on the September 11th edition of SmackDown in Mexico City.
Backstage Ambushes and Additional Mexico City Bouts Announced
The tapings established several other high-profile feuds and matches across the roster. Gunther, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn all spoke to open the show. CM Punk talked to Nick Aldis backstage. This leads to Johnny Gargano coming out of his comatose state after Punk offered him a shot at the WWE Championship. Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton exchanged words. There was a Lil Yachty music video. Bakusai (Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki) defeated The Miz & Kit Wilson. Another match between Blake Monroe and Giulia never took place as Giulia attacked Monroe before the match started.
