While CPS Energy restored power to hundreds of thousands of customers, dropping active outages below 10,000 by Sunday evening, several schools and local businesses remained closed heading into Monday morning.
Severe Flooding Prompts Death Investigations in San Antonio
San Antonio police are investigating two deaths related to the severe weather that battered the city on Friday night, August 28, 2026. Acting Police Chief Jesse Salame stated that emergency personnel responded to a report of two people swept away by rushing water in San Pedro Creek, north of downtown. Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones confirmed that the victim was an unhoused neighbor.
Authorities initiated a second investigation after discovering the body of a man in his 50s at Woodlawn Park on Sunday morning. The Bexar County medical examiner is reviewing the circumstances of both incidents to determine if the storm directly caused the fatalities.
CPS Energy Outages Fall Below 10,000 as Regional Crews Assist Restoration
The severe weather knocked out power for roughly 250,000 customers at its peak on Friday night, according to Interim CPS Energy President and CEO Frank Almaraz. Utility crews faced extensive infrastructure damage, including broken utility poles, downed power lines, and fallen trees across the service area.
To accelerate repairs, the Pedernales Electric Cooperative dispatched 50 lineworkers and support staff from Johnson City to assist local crews.

By Sunday evening, active outages dropped to 6,030 customers, down from tens of thousands earlier in the weekend. Almaraz warned during a press briefing that restoration for the remaining isolated outages could extend into early next week as technicians repair heavily damaged equipment.
School Schedules Resume Partially While Campus Inspections Continue
Local school districts evaluated facilities on Sunday before establishing operating schedules for Monday, August 31, 2026. The San Antonio Independent School District announced that its schools will operate on a normal schedule after district teams inspected campuses to verify they were safe and operational.
Northside ISD and North East ISD reported no major interruptions. However, Southwest ISD kept Medio Creek Elementary and Sun Valley Elementary closed on Monday because those specific campuses remained without electricity. Meanwhile, Our Lady of the Lake University canceled all Monday classes and closed its San Antonio campus due to ongoing storm damage and power outages.
City Facilities, Jails, and Community Support Services
Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai addressed operational challenges at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, which experienced utility disruptions during the storm. Sakai confirmed that the jail is fully operational following emergency intervention over the weekend.
City officials extended operations at resilience hubs offering cooling, device charging, and medical supply refrigeration through noon on Monday. VIA Metropolitan Transit continued to provide free rides to these locations. In addition, the Salvation Army shelter on Elmira Street utilized backup generators to cool parts of its facility after high winds ripped away sections of its roof.
