To combat the growing crisis, the report outlines five core policy recommendations aimed at reshaping environmental oversight. These include establishing legally binding targets for cutting microplastic pollution, regulating the largest sources of microplastic releases, and expanding producer responsibility across the complete plastics lifecycle. Additional recommendations call for improved wastewater, sewage sludge, and soil protections alongside a coordinated national monitoring and evidence system.
Dr Antaya March, director of the Revolution Plastics Institute’s Global Plastics Policy Centre and co-author of the report, emphasized the need for immediate action. The UK has an opportunity to replace a fragmented response with a coordinated strategy, she argued, noting that authorities should not wait for every scientific uncertainty to be resolved before intervening to prevent pollution and reduce future risks.
