Singapore’s success with Project Wolbachia to suppress local mosquito populations has prompted European Union officials to examine the vector-control strategy as climate change accelerates the spread of tropical diseases across the continent, according to the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority.
European Officials Tour Singapore Facility to Assess Wolbachia Approach
On Sept 1, Florika Fink-Hooijer, director-general of the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority, visited a mosquito production facility in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore. According to Fink-Hooijer, the visit aimed to determine if European nations can adopt a similar Wolbachia approach for mosquito suppression. Launched in 2016 by Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA), Project Wolbachia releases lab-grown male mosquitoes infected with the Wolbachia bacteria. When these males mate with wild female mosquitoes, the resulting eggs do not hatch, driving down the overall population over time.
Dengue Surge Drives EU Health Urgency Amid Rising Temperatures
Data presented during the visit show that mosquito populations at Project Wolbachia sites in Singapore have dropped by 80 per cent to 90 per cent. Furthermore, the risk of acquiring dengue has fallen by more than 70 per cent, with the project slated to cover more than half of all households in Singapore by October. This high-level efficacy comes as the EU faces a dramatic rise in vector-borne diseases. Fink-Hooijer noted that between 2015 and 2024, dengue cases in the EU surged by 300 per cent, spreading northward from southern countries like Italy, Portugal, Greece, and Spain to nations like Belgium, alongside locally transmitted cases reported in France as of August 2026.

Despite the program’s success in Southeast Asia, Fink-Hooijer told reporters that simply transplanting Project Wolbachia into the EU is not feasible due to differing environmental conditions, regulatory frameworks, and mosquito species. According to Ng Lee Ching, group director of the NEA’s Environmental Health Institute, the primary vector in Europe is the greenery-loving Tiger mosquito, whereas the indoors-loving Aedes aegypti mosquito drives transmission in Singapore. Because of these distinct landscapes and epidemiological settings, Ng noted that release and tracking methods, as well as community engagement strategies, must be tailored specifically to Europe rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all model.
Broader Threat of Emerging Mosquito-Borne Illnesses
Dengue is not the only pathogen raising alarms among European health authorities. Diseases such as chikungunya and West Nile virus are increasingly emerging across the region. At least 12 European countries have reported locally acquired cases of West Nile virus, including one death recorded in the Netherlands on Aug 26. Fink-Hooijer warned that while these diseases are not yet fully endemic, swift action is necessary to prevent them from becoming permanently established, noting that once vector-borne diseases become entrenched, reversing the trend is virtually impossible.
