Buses carrying crew members of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier streamed into Thailand’s seaside resort city of Pattaya on Thursday, marking a scheduled port call following a lengthy deployment to the Middle East, according to reporting by The Associated Press.
USS Abraham Lincoln Crew Arrives in Pattaya for Port Call
The aircraft carrier docked at Laem Chabang port in Chonburi province on Wednesday. The ship’s deployment supported U.S. military operations against Iran and included a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea of 264 days, with a total deployment duration of 286 days, according to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. The deployment also included a stretch of more than 250 consecutive days without a full port visit, as detailed by Yahoo News.
The vessel carries roughly 5,000 service members. Two other ships from the carrier’s strike group were also docked elsewhere in Thailand, with the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. stationed at Chonburi’s Sriracha port and the cruiser USS Robert Smalls located in Map Ta Phut in neighboring Rayong province, as reported by AP.
Economic Hopes and Local Impact in Thailand
The arrival of thousands of sailors and Marines has raised local hopes for a short-term economic boost in Pattaya, a coastal destination that previously saw a tourism transformation during the Vietnam War. Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches stated that individual U.S. military personnel could spend between 1,000 and 3,000 baht per day, roughly $30 to $91, depending on the length of their stay ashore, according to Reuters.
Vendors and travel agents gathered outside the Hard Rock Hotel, which served as the designated pickup and drop-off point for troops traveling from the Lincoln. Merchants offered various souvenirs and services to arriving service members. Among them, a vendor named A-ngoon Sombat traveled 200 kilometers from Ayutthaya to sell braided bracelets, noting that business success depends on luck given the large number of competing vendors.
Dozens of service members were also spotted visiting local commercial centers, such as Pattaya’s Terminal 21 mall, to shop and seek shelter from the heat.
Deployment Conditions and Official Responses
The extended deployment drew attention and public discussion regarding conditions aboard the vessel. Military-focused outlets and reports cited by Reuters and Yahoo News noted concerns over deteriorating mental health, low morale, exhaustion, and food and supply shortages. Visual signs of the lengthy deployment were also apparent on the ship’s exterior, including areas of rust along the hull and near the flight deck.
Addressing the ship’s physical condition, Capt. Dan Keeler, the ship’s commanding officer, stated that the wear was normal following such an extended deployment. Defense leadership also addressed broader questions regarding the mission; Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth defended the operations and expressed gratitude for the crew’s service in austere conditions, while President Donald Trump remarked that the deployment was not nearly long enough, according to AP and Yahoo News.
The USS Abraham Lincoln was relieved in August by the USS George Washington, enabling the Lincoln to begin its journey back toward its U.S. home port in San Diego. The ship is expected to depart Thailand over the weekend to continue its transit.
