U.S. hospital refusals of standard vitamin K injections for newborns jumped 57 percent between January and June 2026, according to an analysis of more than 1 million births by health analytics company Truveta. Pediatricians warn the trend leaves infants vulnerable to late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding, which carries a high risk of fatal brain hemorrhages.
The rate of newborns leaving the hospital without a documented vitamin K administration within 24 hours of birth climbed from 5.2 percent in January to 8.1 percent in June 2026, according to an exclusive data analysis reported by Reuters. That means roughly one in twelve newborns missed the shot by midyear, compared with about one in nineteen six months earlier.
Truveta Health Record Analysis Tracks Sharp Six-Month Increase
The Truveta analysis reviewed health records covering 1,026,375 infants born to 825,599 mothers from January 2019 through June 2026. The findings show that non-receipt rates in the first half of 2026 ran about 2.5 times higher than the average recorded between 2019 and 2024, and roughly 1.4 times higher than the level reported in 2025, as noted in data published across multiple health reporting outlets.
Because no federal reporting system actively tracks vitamin K refusals, researchers rely on large aggregated health record databases like Truveta and hospital network studies. A peer-reviewed national study published in JAMA covering more than 5 million births across 403 hospitals between 2017 and 2024 established a prior baseline, showing non-receipt climbing from 2.92 percent to 5.18 percent over that eight-year window. The 57 percent surge in just the first six months of 2026 represents a sudden, steep acceleration in that slope.
Pediatricians Warn of Life-Threatening Bleeding Risks Without Routine Injection
Newborns enter the world with very low natural reserves of vitamin K, an essential nutrient required for blood clotting. Because minimal amounts cross the placenta and breast milk contains low concentrations, infants rely on the routine intramuscular injection given shortly after birth to prevent vitamin K deficiency bleeding, or VKDB.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains its recommendation for the birth dose, noting that infants who do not receive the injection are 81 times more likely to develop severe bleeding during their first six months of life. Such internal hemorrhaging can occur in the intestines or inside the skull without external warning signs. According to public health data, roughly 30 percent to 60 percent of late VKDB cases involve intracranial bleeding, and about one in five infants who experience severe bleeding will die.
Federal Health Policy Messaging and the Rise in Parental Hesitancy
Specialists interviewed by news outlets connect the sharp rise in refusals to a broader climate of mistrust surrounding vaccines and conventional newborn care. For years, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has questioned established medical interventions and childhood immunization schedules. In January, Kennedy announced decisions to drop recommendations for the hepatitis B birth dose and five other routine childhood vaccines, policy shifts that were subsequently stalled by court rulings but renewed by President Donald Trump in an August 10 executive order.
