A special National Investigation Agency court in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district convicted all 10 accused on Saturday in the 2013 Jhiram Valley Maoist attack case, a devastating ambush that left 29 people dead, including senior Congress leaders.
Special judge of the NIA court in Jagdalpur, Ajay Singh Rajput, delivered the convictions, which include two women among the ten defendants, according to defence lawyer Arvind Choudhary. The court reserved the order on the quantum of punishment for September 16. During the trial proceedings, which initially involved 11 arrested accused before one died, the court recorded testimony from 101 witnesses, the defence lawyer noted.

Legal Defense Plans and Family Claims
Following Saturday’s verdict, defence lawyer Arvind Choudhary stated that his legal team will challenge the decision in the High Court. “We will appeal against the verdict in the high court. We have not received a copy of the judgment yet. We will be able to give the grounds for appeal after receiving it,” Choudhary said, expressing hope that the accused would get justice from the high court.
“They were not there at the time of the attack. The families are distressed and shattered,” Guddu said.
Expert Insight: The conviction represents a major milestone in a complex legal journey that has stretched across more than a decade, involving multiple judicial commissions, parallel investigations by the NIA and a Special Investigation Team, and numerous legal challenges up to the Supreme Court. While the court’s verdict brings legal closure for the lower-tier cadres involved, the upcoming September 16 sentencing and the anticipated High Court appeals mean the judicial battle over the Jhiram Valley massacre remains active.
Political Fallout and Historical Context
The tragedy has generated intense political fallout over the years between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with both parties trading allegations regarding security failures and the handling of the investigation.

The NIA filed its chargesheet before the special court in Jagdalpur in September 2014. The NIA took over the probe into the case and charged 39 cadres of the banned outfit.
