The public rift traces back to August 5, when an attorney representing Daniels sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry.
The conflict erupted after LSU assigned the No. 5 jersey—worn by Daniels during his 2023 Heisman campaign—to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett. Former head coach Brian Kelly reportedly promised Pickett the number during recruitment, though it was not issued while Daniels was still on campus. When Lane Kiffin took over as head coach, he chose to honor that commitment, allowing Pickett to wear the digit.
Daniels’ camp felt the university should have protected the number to honor his legacy, much like Joe Burrow’s No. 9 jersey has remained untouched since he was drafted. Under LSU guidelines, a player must be removed from the program for five years before a jersey retirement can be considered, making an immediate retirement impossible. Unable to legally own a jersey number, Daniels’ legal team leveraged his NIL rights instead.
