Apple Unveils iPhone Duo as First Entry Into Foldable Smartphone Market

Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the introduction of the iPhone Duo. Unveiled on September 9, 2026, during the Surprise and Shine event at Apple Park in Cupertino, the device represents the first major product presentation by Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1.

The iPhone Duo is described by Ternus as the most transformational change to the iPhone since the original product. The device features a foldable design that allows it to function as a compact, pocketable phone when closed and a larger canvas for multitasking and gaming when opened.

Hardware Design and Display Specifications

The iPhone Duo utilizes two displays with the same aspect ratio to ensure visual continuity as content scales. When closed, the device features a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display, which provides 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. When opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, making it the thinnest iPhone ever in its open state.

Both displays include ProMotion and Always On technology, with a peak outdoor brightness of 3000 nits. The inner display is protected by a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other industry materials, along with a scratch-resistant coating. The front of the device is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims offers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, while the back uses Ceramic Shield.

The foldable mechanism is powered by a precision hinge consisting of more than 100 components. To ensure structural integrity, the device includes internal support ribs for stiffness and antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts to enhance the frame’s rigidity.

Performance, AI, and Integration

Powered by the A20 Pro chip, the iPhone Duo integrates Apple Intelligence and Siri AI to provide capabilities based on a user’s personal context. The device supports multitasking with up to two apps running simultaneously. Additionally, Apple announced that the iPhone Duo will support the Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year, enabling sketching and note-taking on either display.

Security is handled via Touch ID, which is integrated into the side button for authentication whether the phone is open or closed. Users also have the option to unlock the device using an Apple Watch. In terms of durability, the iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating, meaning it is dust-resistant and can withstand submersion in up to 6 meters of water for 30 minutes.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone Duo is positioned as a premium luxury device, starting at $1,999 for the 256 GB model, the most expensive mainstream iPhone Apple has ever released. It is available in two colors: night sky and star white.

Market Position and Competition

Industry analysts suggest Apple’s entry into this category could reshape the foldable segment. According to USA Today, research firm IDC forecasts that Apple could ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones over the next several years and capture approximately 40% of the global foldable market by 2027.

Compared to competitors, CNET notes that while the iPhone Duo is more compact than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, it lacks a telephoto camera and has a more modest battery. However, the Duo’s IP68 rating exceeds the IP48 rating of the Z Fold 8 Ultra, particularly regarding dust resistance.
