In his acceptance speech, Fox reflected on Hope’s decades of service to members of the military and the example the legendary entertainer set. He embodied everything I came to believe in years later, Fox said. When circumstances get tough, you show up, you help, and if you can add a little joy while you’re doing it, that seems better. Fox connected that lesson to his own experience with Parkinson’s disease, acknowledging that he initially kept his diagnosis private because he feared it could jeopardize his career and his relationship with audiences.

Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret. I worried that it would affect my work and my relationship with audiences, Fox said on the Emmy Awards’ stage. “Would they laugh if they knew I was sick? And then I was stunned by the support I got. The support from all of you. It was so uplifting. It made me feel like I could keep doing this and I hadn’t lost what I do and they couldn’t take this away from me. And it’s because you stood up for me, and I really appreciate it.” He added, I understood that accepting Parkinson’s didn’t mean I had to surrender to it. It just meant I had to do everything I could for everyone living with this disease.
