The most promising and robust technology under development is navigation based on irregularities in the Earth’s magnetic field, according to Serhii Beskrestnov. Advanced global companies are actively building these systems. While this magnetic navigation remains in development, military units are deploying alternative methods, primarily ground radio beacons. Serhii Beskrestnov explained that devices use onboard receivers to process signals from three terrestrial radio beacons with known coordinates. By measuring signal delays, the system calculates the exact location of a drone.

Ukraine currently deploys this technology on reconnaissance drones. Meanwhile, Russian forces implemented radio beacon navigation earlier, equipping Zala drones with the function in 2022. According to Serhii Beskrestnov, Russia has continued refining this technology under the project name “Ariadne.” In December 2025, Russia announced plans to integrate the Ariadne system into Shahed drones and aviation bombs. If fully developed, the system could allow invading forces to navigate up to 100 kilometers deep into Ukrainian territory, enabling precise strikes across a vast portion of the country, as noted by the Ukrainian presidential advisor.

To counter incoming aerial threats without depleting costly interceptor missiles, Ukraine utilizes the “Lima” electronic warfare system. When satellite signals are blocked, long-range Russian weapons rely on inertial navigation systems, which drift by roughly 2 kilometers per 100 kilometers of travel.

The Lima system goes beyond basic jamming by spoofing signals and altering coordinates by several kilometers. According to “Alchemist,” a Lima developer and commander of the Night Watch electronic warfare unit within the territorial defense forces, the system can trick incoming weapons into landing in open fields rather than urban targets.

“When we create a sufficiently large area protected by Lima stations, the missile won’t even hit the city. We will direct it to an open field,” said Alchemist, as reported by lrytas.lt.

Cost Efficiency and Operational Scaling

The economic advantage of electronic countermeasures compared to kinetic air defense remains a primary driver for deployment. Manufacturing a single Lima unit costs approximately 58,000 euros depending on the version, with protecting a major city requiring between 30 and 100 systems, totaling roughly a few million euros. Cascade Systems has delivered more than 400 Lima units to the military since deployments began in July 2024, expanding protection to civil infrastructure in October 2025.
