Bangkok ranks second in Asia for repeat foreign visitors during the first half of the year, according to booking data released by the online travel platform Agoda. The Thai capital trails only Tokyo, Japan, in the regional rankings for returning travelers.
Asia’s Top Destinations for Repeat Travelers
Agoda booking data shows that Bangkok’s enduring appeal draws travelers back for affordable street food, historic temples, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Indonesia’s resort island Bali secured the third spot in the regional ranking, followed by Seoul and Osaka.
Vietnam’s beach city Da Nang climbed two places to sixth in the Agoda rankings. According to Agoda, Da Nang draws return visitors due to its beaches, value for money, and proximity to the UNESCO-listed Hoi An. Kuala Lumpur, Fukuoka, Taipei, and Johor Bahru round out the rest of the top ten.
Rise of Secondary Cities and Regional Trends
Japan and Vietnam emerged as notable destinations for repeat travel this year. Fukuoka made its debut in Asia’s top ten, reflecting growing interest in Japan’s secondary cities. Known locally as Hakata, Fukuoka attracts visitors with tonkotsu ramen, a lively street-food culture, and convenient access to other parts of Kyushu.
“Travel is becoming less about ticking destinations off a list and more about finding places worth returning to,” Akaporn Rodkong, Country Director, Thailand and Indochina at Agoda, said. She added that repeat visits do not necessarily mean repeating the same trip, as travelers often return for a favorite restaurant or neighbourhood while discovering something new each time.
Global Tourism Accolades and Nightlife
Beyond Agoda’s repeat visitor data, Bangkok retained its title as the world’s most visited city for 2025 with over 30.3 million international visitors, according to an annual report by British research firm Euromonitor International. The city is widely recognized for neon-lit entertainment districts, hundreds of rooftop bars, and electronic dance music clubs. British magazine Time Out also recently voted Bangkok the world’s best city for nightlife.
