Former Fox Business producer and podcaster Jennifer Eckhart died at her Hobe Sound home at age 36. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed that investigators initially treated the scene as a potential homicide before medical examiners and detectives officially ruled the death a suicide.

Authorities responded to the residence after Eckhart’s mother found her body in the master bedroom bathtub on September 19. A responding deputy noted a large laceration to the neck with a folding pocketknife lying next to her right hand. She was pronounced dead at 11:57 a.m. by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators are still awaiting final toxicology test results, though the sheriff emphasized that all evidence gathered by the criminal investigations division and crime scene personnel points directly to suicide.

Sheriff Budensiek stated that Eckhart’s family and neighbors reported she had been struggling significantly with her mental health in recent months. Over the preceding 18 months, local law enforcement in Martin and Palm Beach counties had committed Eckhart six times under Florida’s Baker Act for evaluation.
She recently spent a seven-week period inside a facility trying to manage suicidal ideation and personal challenges, but had been discharged just one week prior to her death. According to investigators, she appeared to have stopped taking prescribed medications after leaving the facility.
Neighbors described erratic behavior, and deputies visited the home in the preceding week following an argument between Eckhart and her father, though she did not meet legal criteria for another involuntary commitment at that time. On September 18, Eckhart attempted to purchase a firearm but was blocked by a mandatory waiting period. She subsequently purchased the knife recovered at the scene.

Born in Miami, Eckhart graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in telecommunications-news and worked as an entertainment anchor for WUFT-TV. She joined Fox Business Network as an associate producer in 2013 and later appeared across various network platforms.
