Marvel’s Wolverine Update Adds Toggles to Disable Scent Trails

Insomniac Games has deployed a new update for Marvel’s Wolverine on PlayStation 5 that introduces toggleable options to turn off controversial scent trails and audio clues. The patch follows significant community backlash over repetitive on-screen hints, even as the title achieves strong commercial sales following its launch.

Update 1.001.006 Adds Senses Toggles for Collectibles

Players diving into Marvel’s Wolverine on the PlayStation 5 can now head into the settings menu to strip away some of the game’s most visible navigation prompts. Having downloaded PS5 patch 1.001.006, there will be a new toggle in the settings that lets you turn off all of the scent trails and indicators that lead you to collectibles. There are three new toggle settings that players can now use to customize their gameplay experience: one for Whiskey Bottle scent trails, one for Material Crate Audio Clues, and one for Nightmare Door Roots. As noted in the in-game settings, using Wolverine’s Crate Finder and Whiskey Finder Adaptations will override any. In the off position, it means the only Senses and blue-scent trails that still appear are story-critical ones. Story-critical Senses will continue to appear in the world.

The new toggles are pretty straightforward. If players find the wavy visuals to be a bit too distracting, they can simply turn them off. This means that the purple roots won’t appear in the ground when you’re near to a Nightmare Door, the audio alerts tied to Material Crates won’t sound, and the scent trail leading you to Whisky Bottles will not appear anymore. Those first two proved to be an especially hot topic online, with players criticizing in-game hints as one of a few examples of a game many feel is too ‘hand-holdy.’ Adding the option to completely turn these guides off should quiet those concerns, with a toggle for Nightmare Door Roots adding even more freedom for players to tailor their Marvel’s Wolverine experience to their liking.

Backlash Over Hand-Holdy Design Prompts Quick Hotfixes

Developer Insomniac Games has officially nerfed the glowing scent trails that guide Logan through the environment, a feature that had become a frequent target of online mockery and criticism for being overly intrusive. The game has faced significant discourse regarding its hand-holdy design choices. Players have frequently pointed out that the combination of the scent trail, constant voice lines, and persistent on-screen markers often makes it impossible to get lost, which some argue removes the sense of exploration. This feedback mirrors recent industry discussions surrounding visual cues in other major titles, where players have expressed frustration with design elements that feel condescending or unnecessary. This latest adjustment is a direct response to the community backlash. And it’s been loud and clear for Wolverine–for days, the internet was littered with clips and gifs making fun of various features like the scent trails, which basically show players exactly where to go at any given time. Insomniac Games has published a new Marvel’s Wolverine update that adds an option to turn off those controversial scent trails for collectibles. Insomniac has released multiple updates for Wolverine, and the latest makes some big changes to the controversial scent trails that lead players through gameplay, significantly reducing their appearance. Today, we deployed a hotfix for Marvel’s Wolverine that includes new toggles for Scent Trails, Audio Clues, and Nightmare Roots, along with fixes for community-reported crashes and bugs.

Technical Fixes Target Photo Mode Claws and Tree Glitches

Beyond movement adjustments, the latest hotfix addresses several community-reported crashes and bugs, including an issue that could leave players stuck during a mission, misaligned claws in Photo Mode, objects turning white after extended play sessions, and an overlapping bathroom sign in the casino. Fixed an issue where players could become stuck while sliding down a tree during The One That Got Away mission.

Commercial Performance and Strong Store Ratings

Despite earning rave reviews from players, Marvel’s Wolverine has been widely criticised for its ‘handholding’ features, leaving its critical acclaim rating to be much lower than it could be. Reaction to the update seems to be quite positive for the most part. Reviews in the time since the game’s release have been interesting with even X, what was the most vociferously negative on the game pre-launch, now far more positive overall, though the usual cohorts complaining of DEI and linear gameplay are still hanging around. On the PlayStation store itself, the title has racked up over 48,000 reviews – the second most reviewed game on PSN that came out this year behind only Resident Evil Requiem. Insomniac has reduced the prominent scent-trail “Senses” in Marvel’s Wolverine and says it may add a toggle to disable them in a future update, responding to backlash even as the game sells strongly and tops PlayStation Store charts.
