The match, billed as “The Homecoming,” marked the host side’s first game since falling to Morocco in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup. The evening began with a ceremony honoring the World Cup squad, which qualified for the knockout stage for the first time and beat South Africa 1-0 in the Round of 32, according to reporting from The Canadian Press.

“We wanted to come back here in Toronto after the World Cup to say thank you to the fans,” said Canadian midfielder Mathieu Choiniere. “I think that’s the best way that we did it – by a win.”

Canada played without several key players for the first of three friendlies scheduled over a fortnight. Captain Alphonso Davies was unavailable due to his honeymoon, defender Derek Cornelius was sidelined with a hip injury, and goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau missed the match for personal reasons. David wore the captain’s armband for 30th-ranked Canada, partnering up top with Cyle Larin.

How Jonathan David Scored the Lone Goal

Canada applied early pressure and broke through in the 12th minute. Ralph Priso initiated the sequence with a long ball to winger Jacob Shaffelburg, who delivered a cross to Larin. Chilean goalkeeper Christian Bravo stopped Larin’s initial shot, but the rebound floated across the goalmouth for David to tap in with his left foot.

“I’m always expecting to score every game,” David said after the match. “So I asked them for it to be prepared.”

Following the goal, David raised a No. 13 Cornelius jersey in the air while returning to the sideline in support of his injured teammate.

Chippy Play and Multiple Red Cards for Chile

The match grew increasingly physical. Chilean midfielder Lucas Cepeda received a red card in the 35th minute after tangling with Canadian defender Richie Laryea. As Cepeda fell, his upward-moving boot caught Laryea on the side of the head, drawing blood near the eyebrow. Laryea received medical attention and remained in the game.

Chile went down to nine men just four minutes into the second half when Gabriel Suazo earned a second yellow card for catching Niko Sigur in the head with his forearm during an aerial duel. Despite a two-man advantage for the remainder of the half, Canada could not extend its lead against a resilient Chilean backline, though Laryea hit the post with a distance strike in the 84th minute.

Roster Milestones and Future Schedule

Head coach Jesse Marsch utilized the match to test squad depth. Jovan Ivanisevic made his national team debut during a wave of substitutions in the 62nd minute, while Richard Chukwu debuted in the 88th minute. Junior Hoilett entered in the 76th minute for his final appearance with the squad, receiving a post-match honor for an 11-year international career.

“I was emotional, man,” Hoilett said. “I was trying to hold it together when I first stepped on the field. It was a special moment.”

Looking ahead, Marsch stated that Canada has set a long-term goal of reaching the top 24 in the world rankings as part of its preparations for the 2030 World Cup in Portugal, Morocco, and Spain. Next up, Canada plays No. 50 Peru in a friendly on Oct. 3 in Montreal, followed by a match against the 16th-ranked United States on Oct. 6 in St. Paul, Minnesota.
