Five men were arrested on suspicion of terror and explosive offences in the early hours of Sunday, after three suspicious vans traveled toward RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, triggering a major security alert, the evacuation of 85 homes, and an investigation into a potential Iranian link.
The Farmer’s 999 Call and the Whelford Arrests
The security operation began shortly after midnight on Sunday morning when a local resident returning from a party noticed three vans blocking a quiet country road near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Spotting what she described as a group of hooded men scattering into the trees, the driver reported the vehicles at 12.45am and warned her local WhatsApp group to lock their doors.
Armed police arrived within 15 minutes. Officers intercepted the three white vans in the nearby village of Whelford and detained five men. Gloucestershire Police confirmed that the suspects were initially held on suspicion of committing offences under the Explosives Act before being further arrested for preparation of a terrorist act.
Whitehall sources later clarified that the initial interception was not pre-planned by UK authorities, contradicting remarks made by United States President Donald Trump, who told reporters in the US that authorities had the suspects under surveillance for an extended period.
Security Lockdown and Bomb Disposal Operations
Following the arrests, authorities established a 400-meter cordon around the vehicles and evacuated 85 households in the area. Aerial footage showed the Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal unit deploying robotic equipment to inspect the vans, which contained scattered barrels of suspicious material.
Temporary Chief Constable Maggie Blyth of Gloucestershire Police told reporters that investigators were working to analyze seized devices while emergency agencies considered the immediate threat contained. Security levels across military installations reflected heightened tensions: RAF Fairford was raised to its highest threat level, Delta, while RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk confirmed it was operating under Charlie alert, the second-highest threat level issued by the US Department of Defense.
Investigating Potential State-Backed Threats
Counter-terrorism detectives are leading the inquiry into whether the suspected bomb plot connects to Iran. In July, Tehran warned that British airbases utilized by US forces to launch strikes were considered legitimate targets. The British government had authorized US bombers to operate from Fairford earlier this spring to conduct defensive actions against Iranian missile sites.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the incident as deeply concerning, emphasizing that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure public safety. Investigators are maintaining an open mind while exploring potential involvement from other hostile states, noting a broader rise in national security cases involving state-backed activity in recent months.
