Late-Season Snow Revitalizes Alps: Skiing and Spring Hiking Opportunities

For those who thought the ski season was winding down with the milder temperatures of early March, believe again. The Alps are experiencing a surprising resurgence of winter conditions, with a significant cold front poised to deliver fresh snowfall. Although crocuses have begun to emerge in the valleys, Mother Nature is shifting gears, offering a final opportunity for skiers and snowboarders, alongside unique conditions for early spring hikers.

France: Snow Returns to the Mountains

The French Alps are the first to feel the impact of the new snow. A precipitation zone is moving across the western part of the range, bringing snow at elevations above 1300 to 1600 meters. Following a calmer period on Thursday and Friday, conditions will change again over the weekend. Saturday will see increased cloud cover and renewed snowfall, with the snow line dropping significantly. Some ski areas could receive 20 to 30 centimeters of fresh snow.

Switzerland: Focus on Western and Northern Alps

Switzerland will also benefit from this weather pattern. Snowfall is expected in the western and northern Alps, initially above 1300 to 1600 meters. A broader precipitation zone will move across the country on Saturday, accompanied by cooler air. This will lower the snow line to around 800 meters, with potential for up to 30 cm of fresh snow in the mountains, providing a welcome boost to ski conditions.

Austria: Several Centimeters Possible

Austria will see a more gradual change. While Wednesday and Thursday will be cloudy with occasional precipitation, the snow line will remain relatively high, around 1500 meters. However, the situation will evolve over the weekend. Increased cloud cover and snowfall are expected on Saturday, with the snow line potentially dropping to 900 meters, or even 400 meters in some locations. Up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow is possible through Monday.

This is particularly excellent news for the NK Freeride in Kappl, which is taking place as part of the Poederbaas Freeride Festival.

Sneeuwupdate: Paznaun maart 2026

The Tirolean winter sports valley of Paznaun is a popular destination for Dutch visitors, offering a wide range of activities. Current snow depths are: Kappl 60-150 cm, Ischgl 20-120 cm, See 100-190 cm and Galtür 60-170 cm.

Italy: New Snow in Piemonte

In Italy, the focus is on the northwest, particularly Piemonte, which is expected to receive the most significant snowfall. This region already experienced unexpected snow earlier this week, and further accumulations are anticipated over the weekend.

Looking Ahead: Winter Isn’t Over Yet

Despite March often bringing milder weather, the current forecasts indicate that winter still has a few tricks up its sleeve for the Alps. The weekend is likely to bring another wave of snowfall, with snow levels dropping in several regions. This offers a final chance for winter sports enthusiasts to enjoy fresh powder and winter conditions, especially in the western Alps.

Did you realize? In some years, crocus flowers can be found blooming in the Alps as late as June.
