Anuv Jain sits backstage at London’s Roundhouse ahead of a sold-out performance, preparing for the final shows on the European leg of his first world tour. Hailing from Ludhiana in the Punjab region of India, the acoustic indie pop performer began singing as a teenager, crafting emotional storylines centered on relationships, love, and longing. His soft vocals and accessible style have propelled him to massive digital reach accumulating hundreds of millions of views on YouTube, alongside 3.9 million followers on Instagram and more than 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Independent Artists Bypass Bollywood Funding

While the Indian music industry has traditionally been dominated by Bollywood movie scores and dramatic ballads backed by significant funding and industry opportunities, Jain represents a growing movement of independent musicians operating in what he describes as an alternate space. Without the promotional machinery of major film productions, independent artists rely on self-distribution and direct digital connections with listeners.

That approach has translated directly to the charts. Tracks like Jo Tum Mere Ho and his collaboration with AP Dhillon titled Afsos both climbed to number one on the Asian Music Charts, demonstrating that emotional acoustic tracks can command top tier reach without cinematic tie-ins. Fans frequently share that his music soundtracks their personal lives, turning specific passages from songs like Arz Kiya Hai into viral moments across TikTok and Instagram.

Creating Gentle Music for Family and Fans

Jain maintains that his creative process is deliberately stripped of formulas or market research. When writing, he envisions how a listener experiencing a quiet moment alone would receive the track.

I just try to make a good song and something that I would like to listen to, something my mum, my sister and my wife would like to listen to. For some reason, the taste that we have in music is gentle enough that when we put it out there, there are millions of people who are wanting to consume all of this.

That personal filter governs his release schedule as well. Jain kept a notably selective pace until recently, releasing only one song per year. He ensures every initiated writing project is seen through to completion rather than left sitting in a half-finished state.

Jain Plans More Frequent Music Releases

That strict release rhythm is changing. Jain reports that several new tracks are fully completed, meaning listeners can expect more frequent music drops throughout the year. Regarding potential partnerships with western artists amid a wave of cross-cultural music collaborations, Jain stresses that any joint project must preserve his core storytelling identity rather than dilute it for commercial scale.

While he notes that he is not yet at the level for high-profile western partnerships, he points to former One Direction star Zayn Malik as an ideal creative match who manages both the Official Singles Chart and Asian Music Charts successfully. Maybe the universe will just make it happen, Jain says.
