Apple and Alibaba to Bring Qwen to Apple Intelligence in China

Apple will launch its first Apple Intelligence features in China this December, integrating Alibaba’s Qwen large language model into the iOS ecosystem. The rollout, confirmed by Apple on Saturday, will begin with a developer beta on November 4, 2026, followed by a public release in iOS 27.3.

Integration of Qwen into Apple Intelligence

The partnership allows Apple users in China to access Qwen’s text and image processing capabilities directly through system-level tools. According to reports, users will be able to access the Qwen model via Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence. "We are delighted to partner with Apple," Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu said, adding that the integration will bring "brand-new intelligent services to Apple users in China."

Siri will utilize Qwen’s broader knowledge base to provide direct answers to queries. Users can also ask questions about selected documents, including presentations and PDF files, as well as photos. The "Compose with Qwen" feature will also allow users to generate original text and images based on prompts. Visual Intelligence, accessible through the Camera Control, Action button, or Control Center, will enable users to identify objects and gather information about their surroundings by selecting the "Ask Qwen" option.

User Privacy and Opt-in Requirements

The integration is an opt-in experience. Apple requires explicit user consent before any image, document, or question is transmitted to Qwen, according to the companies. Once enabled, users can sign in using their existing Qwen account or Apple’s own sign-in service.

Alibaba stated that user requests and the subsequent AI-generated responses will not be used to train its models. The company also confirmed that users retain control over when the tool is invoked and what specific information is shared.

Apple Intelligence Requires Specific Devices and Regions

The initial launch is restricted to users who have purchased an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone and have set both their device region and Apple account country to China. Supported hardware includes the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and later models, as well as the iPhone Air and iPhone Duo.

For these features to function, the device and Siri languages must be set to either English or Simplified Chinese, Apple stated. While this update introduces writing tools, photo object removal, real-time translation, and smart replies, it does not include the more advanced Siri AI capabilities or other next-generation features previously showcased at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. The rollout will specifically include Genmoji, the Clean Up photo tool, and Live Translation within Phone, FaceTime and Messages. Mail and notifications will also feature priority sorting and summaries.

Regulatory Path to Launch

This development follows regulatory clearance granted in July by China’s internet regulator, which cleared the setup for Apple’s on-device generative AI service. In July, Apple Intelligence was among seven generative AI services that completed necessary regulatory filings in China. Apple previously trained a model specifically for China with assistance from Alibaba, and those features briefly went live in March before receiving official approval.

Apple has indicated that support for additional platforms will be pursued once the required approvals are obtained. The current release schedule follows the recent launch of iOS 27.2, which arrived on October 26 and included updates to Messages, Photos, and Apple Music, as reported by The Mac Observer.

Does the December update include all Apple Intelligence features?
No. The December release of iOS 27.3 will include tools like photo object removal, text summarization, and translation, but it will exclude the more advanced Siri AI capabilities and other next-generation features announced at the 2026 Worldwide Developers Conference.

Can users opt out of the Qwen integration?
Yes. The integration is entirely opt-in, and users maintain control over when the model is used and what data is shared, according to Alibaba.

Developers Can Install iOS 27.3 Beta 1

Registered developers can install the Beta 1 update via Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates by selecting the iOS 27 Developer Beta channel. Once the stable version of iOS 27.3 is available, users can download it through the standard Software Update menu in General Settings. While the public release is expected in mid-December, some estimates suggest the Developer Beta 1 could arrive as early as November 2, with a Public Beta 1 following in early November.
