Austin Smotherman earned $1,080,000 and 500 FedExCup points to secure his first career PGA Tour victory at the Bank of Utah Championship. The win, achieved in his 100th career start on the circuit, moves Smotherman to 51st in the FedExCup standings and places him in the first position in the first phase of the Aon Next 10 for the 2027 season.
Smotherman claimed the title at Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah, finishing with a total score of 26-under 258. The two players competed together in the final pairing of the event, which Smotherman sealed with a 2-foot putt. He finished two strokes ahead of runner-up Doug Ghim, who posted 24-under.
Smotherman Wins After Shooting a Career-Matching Low Round
The Bank of Utah Championship featured a $6 million purse, with 70 players cashing. Following Smotherman and Ghim, David Ford and Trace Crowe tied for third, each earning $354,000 and 162.5 FedExCup points.
Smotherman’s path to victory included a career-matching low round of 9-under 62 on Friday. That performance, which featured 10 birdies, gave him a 36-hole lead at 17-under 125. He had previously held a 36-hole lead earlier this year at the Cognizant Classic, where he finished tied for second. Regarding his Friday round, Smotherman said, “It was just very steady … a lot of greens, a lot of fairways, a couple tight wedges,” adding, “It’s what you’ve got to do to shoot 9 under.” Eight of those birdies were from inside 10 feet. He led Kevin Roy by one shot and Doug Ghim and Kevin Streelman by two after 36 holes.
Course Details
The event took place from October 1 to October 4, 2026, on a par-71 layout designed by Phil Smith and Tom Weiskopf. The course measures 7,421 yards but plays shorter because it is 3,100 feet above sea level. The venue is characterized by 7,000-square-foot greens, two-inch Kentucky bluegrass rough, wide bentgrass fairways, and dark lava rock.
FedExCup Fall Stakes
The event served as the second of eight tournaments in the FedExCup Fall series. Under revamped PGA Tour rules, the competition carries significant weight for player status: those finishing inside the top 100 in FedExCup points earn full tournament exemptions for 2027, while those between 101st and 125th receive conditional status.

Other players who cashed included Kevin Streelman and Ben James, who tied for fifth with earnings of $231,750 each. Not all favorites fared as well; Utah native Tony Finau missed the cut and did not play the weekend. Jackson Koivun survived the cut by converting a 6-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to finish at 6-under 136.
The 120-player field included defending champion Michael Brennan and Presidents Cup players Nick Taylor, Jackson Koivun, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Top 50 FedExCup golfers Maverick McNealy, Matt McCarty, and Eric Cole also competed, alongside AON Next 10 contenders Harry Hall, Sudarshan Yellamaraju, Pierceson Coody, and Max Homa. Amateur Kihei Akina finished ninth and can accept a spot at Port Royal Golf Course in three weeks.
While Smotherman has secured his position for the upcoming season, the final standings for other players fighting for the top 100 cutoff remain to be determined as the 2026 PGA Tour season concludes.
